A Small Decision That Affects Every Single Day
The toilet door is one of those renovation items that nobody spends much time on during planning and then everyone has strong feelings about once they are living with their choice. It is opened and closed multiple times a day by every person in the household. In a compact HDB flat where every centimetre counts, how the door opens, how much floor space it requires and how well it manages moisture all matter more than most homeowners factor in at the start.
The question usually comes down to two types: the swing door and the pocket door. Here is what you actually need to know to make the right call for your flat.
Swing Door: The Reliable Default
A swing door is a standard hinged door that opens inward into the bathroom or outward into the corridor. This is the configuration most HDB flats come with and the one most Singapore homeowners grew up with. It works. The hardware is simple, widely available and easy to maintain. If a hinge wears out or a closer needs replacing, it is a straightforward and inexpensive fix.
Swing doors also seal better than pocket doors when closed because the weight of the door presses against the frame. This matters for moisture containment in a bathroom that generates steam daily and for acoustic privacy.
The trade-off is the swing arc. A door that swings inward takes up usable floor space inside a bathroom that is already compact in most HDB flats. A door that swings outward requires clear corridor space that is often in short supply. If the corridor outside your toilet is narrow or if there is furniture or foot traffic nearby, an outward-swinging door becomes a daily inconvenience.
Pocket Door: The Space Saver
A pocket door slides horizontally into a wall cavity rather than swinging open. When fully open it disappears completely into the wall and takes up no floor space at all. When closed it sits flush with the wall frame. For tight HDB floor plans, this is a genuinely significant functional improvement.
Pocket doors are the right choice when the bathroom or surrounding corridor is genuinely space-constrained and when the swing arc of a conventional door creates a real daily problem. In a 3-room HDB flat with a narrow corridor and compact bathrooms, a pocket door can make a meaningful and lasting difference to how the space works.
The trade-offs are worth knowing before you commit. Pocket doors cost more to install because they require a wall cavity built specifically to house the door panel. The sliding mechanism and track hardware is more complex than a standard hinge and if something develops a fault after renovation, accessing it for repair means opening up the wall. They also do not seal as tightly as a swing door when closed.
The most important practical note: install a pocket door during a renovation when the wall is being built or rebuilt specifically for the purpose. Retrofitting a pocket door into an existing solid wall is a significantly more involved and more expensive exercise.
Which Direction Should a Swing Door Open?
If you choose a swing door, the direction of opening matters. The general rule is that a toilet door should open outward into the corridor rather than inward into the bathroom. This is a safety consideration: if someone falls inside the bathroom and collapses against an inward-swinging door, the door cannot be opened from the outside. An outward-swinging door remains accessible regardless of what happens inside.
HDB does not mandate a specific swing direction but outward is the recommended practice for safety. The corridor clearance needs to be sufficient to allow the door to open freely without hitting furniture or obstructing foot traffic.
Door Materials That Work in Singapore Bathrooms
The material your toilet door is made from affects how it holds up against Singapore’s humidity over years of daily use:
- WPC (Wood Plastic Composite): The most practical choice for Singapore bathroom doors. Fully moisture-resistant, does not warp or swell and is available in finishes that replicate timber grain convincingly. Handles the humidity and temperature fluctuations of a Singapore bathroom without any special treatment.
- PVC: A lightweight and fully waterproof option. More affordable than WPC and appropriate for bathrooms. Fewer finish options than WPC but performs reliably.
- Aluminium-framed glass: Popular in contemporary HDB renovations. Frosted or sandblasted glass panels in an aluminium frame are moisture-resistant, allow light to pass through and keep a bathroom from feeling enclosed. The frame requires occasional cleaning around the joints but is otherwise low maintenance.
- Solid timber or timber veneer: Not recommended for direct toilet door use in Singapore’s humidity without proper sealing and regular maintenance. Real timber absorbs moisture, swells and warps over time in a bathroom environment. If you want the aesthetic, WPC in a timber-look finish delivers it with none of the maintenance burden.
What Does a Toilet Door Replacement Cost?
For a standard HDB bathroom door replacement in 2026:
- WPC or PVC swing door installed: $300 to $700
- Aluminium-framed glass swing door: $500 to $1,200
- Pocket door including wall cavity construction: $1,200 to $2,500
Door replacement is best timed alongside a bathroom renovation so it integrates cleanly with the other wet works. A door installed after the bathroom is tiled and painted avoids the risk of damaging finished surfaces during installation.
